We live in small places on the map,
places which hardly matter
except to those
who take these places into their heart
"This is how I like
and I could not say anything more"
The tug and the pull.
The sun will rise
after the sundown.
I can throw a rope down
from here to my sister's town.
and she will rise
in answer to my call.
It's enough that I see the sun every day,
though the night that comes is dark too often.
Countries live because here we are who say we live,
and we live for what we love:
these little places in our hearts.

Based on Anna del Valle Marti's post on Catalan Art And Culture
'Most musical, most melancholy' bird!
A melancholy bird! Oh! idle thought!
In nature there is nothing melancholy.
But some night-wandering man, whose heart was pierced
With the remembrance of a grievous wrong,
Or slow distemper, or neglected love,
(And so, poor wretch! filled all things with himself,
And made all gentle sounds tell back the tale
Of his own sorrow) he, and such as he,
First named these notes a melancholy strain.

At the break of the day, step out and greet the winter sun.

Stand beneath the street lamp,
and feel the signature of the passing night.
The lamplight fading; the night is wilting,
melting with the rising sun.

A wondrous moment to spend alone
knowing the whispers of the barren trees
are meant for you standing alone
in the rare light of the winter sun.

 German artist Berthold Woltze

Restful, curled up, blissful in sleep,
dreamless, sensuous, innocent, serene.
An afternoon siesta
was enticing
in its marvelous indolence
Thoughts, moods and feelings,
every cause of vulnerability
is banished, and the purity of soul
has returned. Storms retreat to the remote sea.
The bliss it is of solitude

 Redolent of scents,

sweet orange and lavender,
the euphoric fragrance,
laden with the perfumes
of orchards baked in the tropical sun,
the aromas stolen from Egyptian queens,
the lady surrounds herself in a rich mist of indolence.
Inebriate, sweet and pungent all at once,
seductive, calm, serene in her love of the Narcissus,
she inhales the air, the long hours of solitude,
the woman's understanding of longing.

The Muse

Do you want us to meet at night, O Muse?

to paint the stars in each other's skies?
The light of the day is for the world to see,
the night sky is for the stars to shine.
The best of the human and the stars
needs the shower of the moon

The newspaper was a strong critic of the administration of the Governor General Warren Hastings. The newspaper was important for its provocative journalism well before its time and its fight for free expression in India. Hicky was finally suppressed when Hastings instituted fresh lawsuits against him. Hicky's Bengal Gazette ceased publication on 30 March 1782 when its types were seized by an order of the Supreme Court.

Every word read by the light

that glows on your face,
a sign you left behind
on your forward way.
I, like a baby fallen asleep
wasn't aware of the thoughts
that your mind slowly reflected
and held in gestation as I slept.
All I recall now is your infinite yearning for light,
You stayed awake as I fell asleep,
and your thoughts were the heralds of a new day.
You and I lived in different spheres. your day started
when I ended mine.
This was how we conversed, Shantha,
in the twilight we shared between day and night.
Sometimes you were the baby in my lap and I the reading mom,
and sometimes I the babe and you the mother;
we had almost grown into one another.
Today when we hardly meet
the realisation dawns
and keeps me awake.

Dedicated to my friend Shantha Hulme.
