Broken logs,
bearing scars,
weathering storms
and the burning sun!
I saw them once
in the bright sun,
as though laughing in mockery
at the vagaries of time,
they sat like two souls
inseparable,
leaving no cleavage between.
I saw them once
in the bright sun
and since then it has been an obsession.
I have not spent a single evening
without a visit to the site where they sit
as if the scrolls of time on their trunks is the testimony
that certain forms of life
are undying.
My beloved ones, I do not know
who planted you on this waterfront and why,
how you grew so close
and how someday you were overrun by a storm.
Often I thought of irrigating your roots
but withheld the thought.
Your happiness may not be in what I seek for you
in my ignorance of the minds and the lives of trees.
You look so happy in this unspoiled joy
of sitting together and basking in the golden sun!
