The two Mermaids

Above the ocean's floor
the two mermaids breathe,
suspended in the void
where nothing else breathes
save the two of them.
It's time to leave
and break out of the bondage
each to each.
The sea is such a homogeneity!
the swirling tides, the onrush with the winds,
and yet nothing breaks;
the sea is whole!
How will the mermaids
break free of the sea?

  • When I wrote this poem I did not know how It came to be written in this way. When Tony Langmach pointed out that it reminded him of a tale from Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales I realized the subconscious links in my mind.

  • And now that you have said it, I realize that this poem does have the elements of Hans Andersen's Mermaids. The memory of that episode wherein the Little Mermaid's elder sister prepared her to transform into a human and the meeting between them before her departure to the world above the sea...
    was deeply ingrained in my mind. I was not conscious of it but that is how the poem took this form at the subconscious level. Thanks for your observation. Sometimes the poet does not know how the form comes into being.
