  • Good morning. One doubt, I think we refer Atman to an object without gender. Am, I wrong ?

Atman is the root word in grammar but when used in discourse it has been given a living identity, for example, "Atma eva atmanaha sakha" . In spoken languages it is given genders differently, for example, in Marathi, "Maza atma", in Hindi, "Meri atma". I personally prefer to use it with gender. In the philosophy of the occult it has no gender.

You are right, the choice of gendering is individual. From a philosophical point, "Atma" is independent of the body. It can reside in varied bodies. So gendering it is temporary. This is my view.

It is a power of divine origin, beyond grammar and language. But various languages express it differently because languages follow grammar and grammar follows convention. Paramatma and Atma are beyond any concepts of language. That is how Vedas and Geeta explain them. There are chapters devoted especially to this subject in Geeta. The knowledge of Atman comes under Para Vidya.

Yes, modern humanity can't trace the origins of Vedas. But, a lot of content written in it is very relevant even in the current era. Many atheists and non Hindu believers junk the concept of "Atma" as an imagination. I read one book " Evolution of Everything" In one chapter on evolution of DNA , Matt Ridley the author borrows completely the same concept and argument that DNA travels from one body to other, it has it's own knowledge to keep itself.

Your historical enumeration of those hell-like events are so true, priceless and invaluable that I feel proud to save them so that I could refresh my memory at will. God bless you and protect you and you continue contributing with your dispassionate, objective, liberal and secular outlook.

Zafar Ahmed Thank you from the heart. I am glad to find in you a fellow-traveler. Indeed in you too, I have found a fellow being, and I am using your own words, "a dispassionate, objective, liberal and secular " friend. Thank you again for your insight.
